Dr Abiriga's murder suspects remanded

The remanded suspects include Abiriga's 31-year-old widow, Betty Cherotich, Joshua Namureng a builder and resident of Tarobya village in Bukwo district, and Martin Kipsang 31, a carpenter and a resident of Roruk village in Bukwo district. They appeared before Masindi grade one magistrate Selsa Biwaga on Tuesday who further remanded them until February 13. State prosecutor Munanura Arinaitwe Aganyira informed the court that investigations into the matter are still on and asked the court to give them more time to conclude the investigations. He asked for an adjournment into the matter. Initially, the suspects were supposed to be remanded to Masindi prison but they opted for Hoima prison citing security reasons. The suspects with others still at large are believed to have conspired, coordinated, masterminded, and murdered Abiriga on January 7. Abiriga sustained severe wounds to the neck, head, both hands and back. On the fateful day, passersby found his body lying a few meters near his gate in Kijura North cell, Masindi. Cherotich was arrested from Masindi while Namureng and Kipsang were arrested from Bukwo district. On January 16, they appeared before the Masindi Magistrate's court. Cherotich reportedly confessed to hiring hitmen for Shs 2.5 million to murder her husband after he repeatedly compared her to other women.
