University lecturer remanded for scalding maid with hot water
October 13, 2024
Atwongyirwe, a resident of Katete Central Cell, appeared before justice Esther Bagala on Thursday. She is accused of causing grievous harm to Kansiime on September 25, 2024, in violation of section 199(a) of the Penal Code Act.
The court heard that Atwongyirwe poured hot water on her maid, resulting in severe injuries. Kansiime is currently receiving treatment at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital.
According to Kansiime, the incident occurred after Atwongyirwe became enraged upon finding her bathing her children late in the evening. Out of anger, Atwongyirwe allegedly grabbed a jug of hot water intended for washing one of the children and poured it on Kansiime, severely burning her.
Justice Bagala declined to take Atwongyirwe's plea, citing the court’s lack of jurisdiction over such serious charges. As a result, Atwongyirwe was remanded to Mbarara Government Main Prison until October 15, when she will return for further proceedings.
Steven Muganga, a human rights activist, condemned the alleged attack, stating that it is disgraceful for a university lecturer, someone in a position of authority and responsibility, to commit such a crime and attempt to evade justice.
