Born and raised in the central district of Masaka, Chance Nalubega came to Kampala with her family in the early 1990s to look for opportunity, only to etch herself into the lives of many Ugandans for decades. With her soulful vocals, energetic stage presence, and blend of traditional and modern rhythms, she's carved a unique space in the African music scene. But her journey to stardom started not on a grand stage, but in the humble setting of a church choir. They were forced to stay in the Church for three months until they were kicked out.
She was compelled to do a lot of odd jobs including working in a salon in Kibuye. That was when she heard a radio advert by Pride band, looking for latent musicians.
It wasn't long before she was drawn to the world of professional music, joining various bands like the renowned Gomiba Band in her teenage years. Gomiba Band served as a crucial stepping stone, allowing Nalubega to hone her skills and develop her signature sound. Influenced by traditional Ugandan rhythms like Kadongo Kamu and the energetic beats of Afrobeat, her music began to take shape. In 1999, at the tender age of 18, she released her debut album, "Guma Omwoyo," marking her entry into the music industry.
Her debut album, filled with hits that spoke of love, social issues, and empowerment, catapulted her to national fame. Songs like "Abatesi," "Kabaka Kristo," and "Sirikawo Baby" became anthems, played in homes, buses, and marketplaces across Uganda. Nalubega's music was not just entertainment; it was a reflection of society, a voice for the voiceless, and a source of comfort for many. The early 2000s saw Nalubega releasing hit after hit, captivating audiences with songs like "Nsula Eyo "Omutima Gunuma" and "Twenywere." Her music resonated with listeners, earning her accolades and a loyal fanbase. However, the journey wasn't without its challenges. In 2008, a legal dispute arose, temporarily derailing her musical momentum. But never one to give up, Nalubega used this time to regroup and refocus. She returned to the music scene in 2012.
