The announcement was made on Tuesday by NUP secretary general David Lewis Rubongoya at the party headquarters in Makerere Kavule. Ivan Ssempijja was named deputy chairperson of the EMC. Other appointments to the committee include: John Mary Ssebuufu – Central region coordinator, Eddie Achoka Egesa (eastern region coordinator), Patrick Loum (northern region coordinator), Julian Kabagambe (western region coordinator), Sultana Salim (publicity secretary), Jonathan Elotu (legal secretary), Eddie Kayabula (secretary) and Alex Lovans Lwanyaga (technical advisor). Rubongoya expressed gratitude to the outgoing committee and urged the incoming members to serve with integrity and commitment. He noted that while the party had planned to complete several activities on its electoral roadmap, those efforts were hampered by frequent police interference. “We have been stopped from doing our activities, yet the NRM even had to suspend parliament and cabinet to carry out their party work. Shame on them,” Rubongoya said. In her remarks, Chemutai formerly the NUP coordinator for the Sebei region promised a new chapter for the EMC, emphasizing transparency and integrity. “We are going to make NUP greater together. I don’t expect anyone to come near me with a bribe. We want to be very different from NRM. If we are like NRM, then why would we seek to replace them? We should just pack our bags and go wait for the country to collapse,” she said. The outgoing committee had faced criticism during the last election cycle over allegations of accepting bribes in exchange for party candidate endorsements. Chemutai pledged that her leadership would restore confidence and credibility to the party’s electoral processes.
