Kitgum hospital gets mobile X-ray machine
June 30, 2025
Kitgum General Hospital has finally received a mobile X-ray machine, ending two years without a functional imaging unit.
The new machine, equipped with computer-aided software, is expected to significantly boost Tuberculosis (TB) screening and diagnosis in the district. For the past two years, patients in need of X-ray services have been forced to seek care from private health facilities within Kitgum municipality, often returning to the hospital with external results for further treatment.
Dr Geoffrey Okello, medical superintendent of Kitgum hospital, welcomed the development, describing it as a critical step towards improving the quality of care. The machine was delivered by the ministry of Health as part of efforts to strengthen diagnostic capacity in public health facilities. Kitgum district chairperson, Arwai Christopher Obol lauded the acquisition, calling it a milestone in the district’s journey to improve healthcare. He said the machine will not only enhance TB diagnosis but also support the hospital’s ambition to become a regional referral facility, given its vast catchment area. State minister for Disaster Preparedness, Relief, and Refugees, Lillian Aber, commended the hospital staff for their dedication under difficult conditions. She pledged to lobby for the repair of the hospital’s main X-ray unit, which has been non-functional for two years. Kitgum deputy resident district commissioner Hajj Walire Marijan urged health workers to ensure proper management of the new equipment. He warned against any attempts to monetise the service.
Any staff found charging money for X-ray services will face disciplinary action, Marijan said.
